I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR…BREAKFAST!!

The I Scream 4 breakfast campaign was started by a team of seven Blind Brook Middle School students as part of the Project Outreach challenge of the international problem-solving competition, Destination Imagination.

The sixth graders, Sarah Keilman, Caroline Levine, Julia Levine, Olivia Morrisey, Margot Schwartz and Eric Spanier, reached out to the Carver Center, an education and social services organization in their community. What they discovered was the urgent need for breakfast food for the 1,300 families that depend on the Carver Center for food, clothing, and other basic necessities. When the team visited the center’s food pantry, the shelves were all but empty of breakfast food. For the first time, the students realized that many kids in their community have to go to school hungry every day and they were determined to do something about it.

As a result, the “I Scream 4 Breakfast” campaign was born. It is designed to raise awareness of the problem, encourage donations, and help families turn breakfast in to a healthy kid-friendly meal. The team is partnering with the supermarket chain “Stop and Shop” for a flash mob and with local nutritionist Joy Bauer, who is working with the sixth graders to come up with cost effective, healthy and delicious recipes that are sure to transform breakfast into the favorite meal of the day. In fact, it might become just as popular as ice cream. Mmmmmm.
