After School Program

The mission of Carver’s After-School Program is to successfully contribute to the learning and healthy development of children. The After-School Program is licensed by the Office of Family and Children Services, and has the distinction of being the only licensed after-school program in Port Chester. By providing children a broad range of activities that fall under three program areas – academic support, enrichment programs, and recreation – we seek to both complement and distinguish ourselves from school. Program offerings include:

Academic Support: Carver supports our children’s academic success through offering homework assistance and tutoring. Each day, children are given adequate time to complete their homework. Homework assistance and tutoring is available and offered as needed by the classroom supervisor or classroom assistant. In addition, we reserve 20 minutes every day for children to read or be read to by an adult or peer.

Enrichment Programs: Learning opportunities that include the arts, music, drama, media/technology, and community service are offered less often in schools these days, and with the exception of community service, are typically expensive and thereby less accessible to low-income families. Carver offers a variety of expanded learning opportunities to every child. Activities include Suzuki violin, ballet, hip hop, ballroom dance, Kuroshido martial arts, a pen-pal program with an orphanage in Kenya, and a book club.

Recreation: For children who live in low-income urban communities, the physical activity after-school programs offer may be the only physical activities the children have access to apart from physical education in school. To meet every child’s need to for physical activity, Carver offers a variety of recreation choices. This year, recreation activities include free play outside, tennis, indoor rugby, basketball, free swim, and swim lessons.

Parent Participation: The parents of After-School Program children maintain a Carver Parent Organization (CPO) for the purpose of increasing parent participation in the After-School Program.
